“Look to God, your soul, and eternity. All the rest is merely a puff of smoke!”
Mother Luisita possessed one particular gift that has intrigued me for years – her ability to get beyond the bitter sorrows of this life so she would be able to “see with God’s eyes.”
At the age of twenty-nine, she experienced the death of her beloved husband. Her desire for a religious community seemingly had multiple false starts. She saw the ravages of persecution and death in the lovely town where she grew up. She suffered poor health most of her life, being plagued with severe diabetic uremia in her later years.
Yet, she regarded these sufferings with indifference. She saw them as the ‘puff of smoke’ that passes. She directs our attention instead to what matters, since it is brilliant with sparkling Light. Here, with the eyes of God, she could see the cascading waterfall of grace that was opened each time her heart was pierced with sorrow.
This is all that really mattered to Mother Luisita. With her whole being she believed that God was at work in each painful circumstance. Her acceptance, her ‘yes’ unleashed the Living Waters of mercy that flow from the Heart of Christ to the world.
This is the gift of wisdom, a wisdom which gives us heaven’s perspective. It is bestowed on those who are given to prayer and deep love of God.
Come Holy Spirit, give us this gift of wisdom that teaches us to see with God’s eyes!
