The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
– John 1:29
John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God, prefigured by the prophet Isaiah’s Suffering Servant and the Passover Lamb. Here, at last, is the long-awaited Messiah who will save his people!
John had attracted an enormous following. We know this because the authorities were concerned enough that they sent “priests and Levites from Jerusalem” to question him. All eyes were on him. And now, John turns those eyes from him to the One for whom he had been sent. What must have those present have thought at these words? Were their hearts affected when they gazed upon this Jesus, the Incarnate God?
Here is the One through whom all were created. He will take away the sin of the world. The sin. All sin. Original and personal. Behold!
Today, John’s voice continues to cry out to us, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” Look upon the Lord and surrender your heart and mind to the Lamb of God who saves you,
If you are able, find an adoration chapel and spend an hour before the Lord in his Blessed Sacrament. Gaze upon his Presence. Adore him and let the King into your life.
