A Daily Reflection on the Scripture Readings at Mass…
“He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; and he saw a poor widow put in two copper coins. And he said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had.’” (Luke 21:1-4).
In the Book of Revelation, we are given a vision of the 144,000 who followed the Land and were singing a new hymn before God’s throne. In the responsorial psalm, we are given a description of those who are able to climb the Lord’s holy mountain—those whose hands are sinless, hearts clean, and without deceit and blemish.
These passages and the example of the simplicity and utter generosity of the widow who from her poverty gave what she had to the treasury show how we should live.
We serve a loving and magnificent king. The Lord Jesus is unlike any earthly king we can imagine. To be citizens in His Kingdom is a great honor and blessing. All are invited to new life in this Kingdom. But, it is a new life. The old is to be left behind as we follow the Lamb along the only paths that will truly fulfill the very purpose for which we were made.
Will you follow the Lord, or do you serve a different king?
