“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust’” (Psalm 91:1-2).

In humble gratitude, we give thanks to the Good God for His steadfast love and care for us. We praise Him for His glory. We call on Him as our Divine Protector.

When we were very young, our understanding of the dangers that surround us was not yet mature. We were frightened of shadows, ghosts and monsters, but we also learned about real dangers from real hurts. For many of us, Mom and Dad were always near; especially Mom.

When I scraped my knee, it was Mom who comforted me and cleaned and bandaged the hurt. When I was caught in my first fib, it was my Dad who consoled me with mercy, yet corrected me with justice.

As we grow into adulthood and beyond, the dangers become more serious. We must know that these dangers have eternal consequences. So we turn to God, our Father in Heaven, who like loving dad and a comforting mom, will protect us by His power and guide us with His wisdom. With the confidence of St. Paul, we surrender to Jesus Christ and fear no evil.

“For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
