We are at War Between the Culture of Life and Death

SEATTLE — “Pope John Paul II was right, we are at war between the culture of life and the culture death,” said Dr. José-Maria Simon, President of the World Federation of the Catholic Medical Association. Dr. Simon is waging that war from Barcelona, Spain. He called upon fellow physicians at 79th annual conference of the Catholic Medical Association in Seattle, “to hold fast onto their faith in this battle of ideologies.”

After three days of intense theological, philosophical and ethical questions, Dr. Simon said the casualties of this great culture and spiritual war, “are against the unborn and born alike.” He added that it is being waged in the mass media, in newspapers, at home in front of the television, in school curriculums and added that, “it is a worldwide struggle that we will win with the help of God.”

As Catholic physicians left Seattle to go home to their practices, while there was a sense of hope, their tasks seem daunting as mainstream society moves farther away from traditional Catholic values. We see it here in the United States and that same darkness has fallen across Europe where Dr. Jose-Maria Simon practices medicine. With a practice in Bracelona, Spain, I talked to him about what it was like for him for Integrated Catholic Life…
